frequently asked questions

Below are answers to some common questions regarding wooden products.

How do you use the Wood Butter product on wooden boards or other raw wood?

Follow these steps when applying the Wood Butter to wood:

  • If too hard, warm the product slightly to soften enough for easy application.

  • Scoop a blob of the paste onto your board. A little goes a long way.

  • Using a clean cloth or cotton rag (or even your clean fingers), rub the butter into the board with the grain until the wax disappears.

  • Let this soak into the board for 5-15 minutes or so. The oil will penetrate the wood and the beeswax will create a protective layer.

  • Rub the board for a minute or so with a clean cloth to buff the finish until soft and smooth. For best results buff in small, circular motions.

  • Let sit for a few minutes to a few hours before use, preferably overnight.

How do you condition a new wooden board?

  • Apply a generous amount of Mineral Oil or Citrus Mineral Oil to the board, and spread it out evenly with a paper towel, your hand or a rag. Watch this videos: Applying tmbr Mineral Oil

  • Let the oil soak into the board for at least two hours, or even overnight.

  • Repeat the steps for the other side of the board.

  • Wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel, and place the board sideways or upright to dry completely.

  • Apply a generous amount of Beeswax Mineral Oil or Wood Butter (you can use both as well), and spread it evenly. You can watch these videos: Applying tmbr Beeswax Mineral Oil or Applying tmbr Wood Butter

How do you maintain a wooden board?

  • Give the board a light sanding with 120grit or 150grit sandpaper.

  • Follow the steps for conditioning a new board above.

Can you use the wood care products on boards with epoxy?

Yes, you can buff the entire board. The oil and / or beeswax won't penetrate the epoxy but it will improve the lustre.  Wipe off excess oil and / or beeswax.

Can you sand the wooden boards?

Yes, all our boards have been sanded to a smooth finish. Wood-only boards are typically sanded to 150grit or 180grit. Epoxy boards are typically sanded to 800grit / 1 200grit to get that smooth, shiny finish.
